Disney Infinity 2.0 – What We Know #1

Brave, Maleficent, Lilo & Stitch and Guardians of the Galaxy spotted in Disney Infinity 2.0 trailer — coming to the new game too?

The announcement of Disney Infinity 2.0: Marvel Super Heroes was accompanied by a new trailer expanded on the previous teaser trailer that hinted at the arrival of at least one Marvel character, Captain America. This version once again starts with his shield bouncing around the Disney Infinity world, but there are far more reveals and we look in depth at what other information can be gleaned from within.

Early in the trailer, we see some familiar faces in the form of Captain Jack Sparrow, Sully and Mr Incredible, the original line-up from the first version of Disney Infinity.

This reinforces the idea that the Disney Infinity platform is backwards compatible and as was mentioned in the press conference at the unveiling, all of your original characters will work in Disney Infinity 2.0.

However, families with children who aren’t as excited by the idea of a game based all around Marvel superheroes can probably take solace in the glimpses of a few non-Marvel characters we see in this trailer, along with the promise made from the Hollywood stage of more Disney characters.

As Cap’s shield moves through the world, a keen eye will spot Stich, from Lilo & Stitch, Brave’s Merida and the evil witch, Maleficent, who gets her own live-action movie this year, starring Angelina Jolie. Those short teases hopefully give us confidence that Marvel isn’t the only string to Disney Infinity 2.0’s bow.

The focus at the moment is definitely on Marvel though and superhero fans should be well satisfied by the number and variety of characters it looks like we’ll be seeing. The trailer features both heroes and villains, mainly focusing on those that are, or will be, featuring in Marvel’s movie franchises. First up, it’s the mighty Avengers, represented here by Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Black Widow, Hulk, Hawkeye and Nick Fury.

These Marvel heroes will have access to new abilities and new ways to upgrade, they’ll be able to hover, fly and, in the case of Hulk, super jump too! The trailer also introduces new vehicles, with two wheeled vehicles making their first appearance on the platform. However, none of these things would be of any use without some enemies to do battle with.

The trailer heavily features the Frost Giants, that Thor is so familiar with fighting, but it appears they’re under the control of his brother Loki, ably assisted by MODOK.

With over 20 Marvel Super Heroes coming and only six physical figures shown so far, there’s plenty of room for more villains, but perhaps the most surprising announcement of the whole trailer was the inclusion of Spider-man and his arch-nemesis Green Goblin.

Spider-man’s movie rights are owned by Sony, rather than Disney and his most recent appearance in a game comes in the form of The Amazing Spider-man 2, from Activision. It looks like the video game license of the character is much more flexible than the movie rights, so fans can look forward to Spidey web-swinging around Disney Infinity 2.0’s world.

Last but by no means least, the upcoming summer blockbuster movie, Guardians of the Galaxy is represented in the trailer with two characters, Rocket Racoon and Groot. This supports Disney’s previous statements about providing day and date support for their movie franchises in Infinity. With that in mind, we might expect a Guardians of the Galaxy playset to be released alongside the starter pack in October, as the film is due out in August.
