Tearaway PlayStation Vita Family Review

We take the PlayStation Vita and PlayStation 4 to our test family to see what their first reaction is to the new technology. Firstly, in this episode we let them loose on the platforming and paper craft of Tearaway.

Whilst Media Molecule’s pixel perfect platforming proved a surprising draw for our new-to-gaming mum (she was determined to finish the level) it was the paper craft printed rewards that caused the biggest stir.
As you progress through the game you are rewarded with papercraft templates of the different creatures you encounter. This means you can make real world versions of your virtual friends and foes — a bit like Skylanders but the figures here are free.

You can watch an unedited version of her experience with the game to get an honest appraisal of what the Vita is like for someone who hasn’t played many games before:

Before the game was launched we interviewed Rex Crowle who told us what had inspired them to make this exclusive Vita title and why the paper side of things really mattered:

The Hunt’s experience with the game mirrored my own family, although for them even the Mum got involved to play — I’m still working on my other half (I’m sure she’d love it):

Official Blurb:
“Journey through a vibrant, living papery world, with a plucky messenger who has a unique message to deliver—to YOU!

The papery world of Tearaway unfolds in your hands, allowing you to reach into the game with your god-like powers and help your new messenger friend, IOTA or ATOI, complete this very special delivery.

You’ll uncover a magical dimension inspired by folklore, and built realistically from paper that unfolds and comes alive before your very eyes. As you explore this world you’ll meet the papercraft creatures that live within it, help out strange new friends and encounter dangerous challenges.

The world of Tearaway blends with our own through the unique features of the Playstation Vita, allowing you to reach up into the world using the rear-touch panel and see your fingertips appear inside the game, solve puzzles using the power of touch, or literally breathe new life into this papercraft land, in an adventure unlike anything you’ve played before.

As you play, you’ll bring a little bit of this papery world back with you, as you collect plans to craft the creatures, treasures, and surroundings of Tearaway from paper in the real world. As you explore, you’ll also see more of your own surroundings appearing inside the paper world too!
