More information on Lego Dimensions was expected at E3. Ahead of the show opening its doors on Tuesday there was a live stream revealing how Lego Dimensions’ Portals levels.
This give us a chance not only to see how the game uses the toy minifigures in this level pack but also how the Toy Pad works with it more generally.
A nice touch is that the Toy Pad regions can light up differently. This then ties to puzzles and colored locations on the screen. In the Portal levels this opens color coded portal doors. If you want a particular character in a particular location you simply move them onto the corresponding color on the Toy Pad.
It’s a minor aspect of the game, but this back and forth between physical and virtual game-play is important for the experience to feel coherent. Also it underlines the integral aspect of the physical Lego here rather than it simply being a way to sell children more plastic bricks.
With more news expected from Skylanders SuperChargers and Disney Infinity 3.0 when E3’s doors open on Tuesday this is by no means the winning blow, but Lego Dimensions has certainly thrown down the gauntlet.
